Who Was Matt Clinton?

Matthew Clinton

Matt Clinton plays a pivotable role in the Gibbons-Walshe family history. When Anne Genevive (Nan) Walshe wanted to leave Mexico she visited friends and relatives in Alabama. Among them was Matthew William (Matt) Clinton. Matt and Nan were second cousins. That is, they shared a great-grandparent.

The chart below shows that Matthew Clinton (1785-1853) was the great-grandfather of both Nan and Matt.

Matthew William Clinton was (among many other things) an historian of Tuscaloosa. These articles are from the column Tuscaloosa Scrapbook published in the Tuscaloosa News in the late 1960’s. Jimmie or Kathleen Gibbons kept a number of these clippings and they are presented here. Special thanks to David Gibbons for bringing these to my attention.

In addition to these articles, Matt Clinton wrote the book, Matt Clinton’s scrapbook One Hundred and fifty years in the life of Tuscaloosa and Northport.
